Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser
Conductor

A passionate communicator with an international career, Daniel brings clarity and meaning to the concert hall, fostering deep connections between audiences and performers. Daniel Bartholomew-Poyser is concurrently the Principal Youth Conductor and Creative Partner of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Principal Education Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Artist in Residence and Community Ambassador of Symphony Nova Scotia and Resident Conductor of Engagement and Education of the San Francisco Symphony.

Daniel has guest conducted the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the LA Phil, the Canadian Opera Company, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Laval, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony, the Carnegie Hall Link-Up Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony, The Calgary Philharmonic, the Modesto Symphony, The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, The Vancouver Symphony, the Regina Symphony Orchestra, the Sacramento Philharmonic, the Windsor Symphony, the Kingston Symphony, the Hamilton Philharmonic, Ensemble Obiora, The National Symphony Orchestra and is the Music Director of the Kennedy Center Summer Music Institute. He served as Assistant Conductor of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Associate Conductor of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and was Cover Conductor with the Washington National Opera.

In addition to his conducting career, Daniel co-hosts the CBC’s “Centre Stage”, a nationally broadcast weekly radio show all about chamber and orchestral Music. He was also the feature subject of an award-winning, the full-length CBC documentary entitled “Disruptor Conductor”.

Daniel earned his Bachelor of Music in Performance and Education from the University of Calgary, and his Master of Philosophy in Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England.

Described as a “mature artist with a profound musical imagination,” (Toronto Concert Reviews),

Cameron Crozman is being hailed as one of Canada’s leading young cellists. He is 2nd prize laureate of both the OSM Standard Life and the Eckhardt-Gramatté Competitions. He was the youngest recipient of the Canada Council Michael Measure’s Prize and was one of 12 cellists chosen internationally to compete at Kronberg Academy’s 2014 Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann.

Maintaining an active schedule, engagements have taken Cameron to such prestigious venues as the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center, Berliner Philharmonie, Paris Philharmonie, Philadelphia’s Mann Center, Montreal’s Maison Symphonique, and Canada’s National Arts Centre. He has performed with the Montréal, Winnipeg, Quebec, and Kitchener-Waterloo symphonies, I Musici de Montréal, London Sinfonia, Orchestre du Conservatoire de Paris, and Orchestre des Lauréats du Conservatoire. In 2012, he toured North America playing Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.

An avid chamber musician, Mr. Crozman has already performed with the likes of James Ehnes, André Laplante, Huw Watkins, Martin Beaver, Gérard Caussé, James Campbell, and members of the Ébène, New Zealand, and Penderecki String Quartets. He regularly appears at festivals including Ottawa Chamberfest, Toronto Summer Music Festival, Montreal Chamber Music Festival, Seattle Chamber Music Festival, Helsinki Musica Nova, Beauvais Cello Festival, Birmingham Frontiers Festival, and Musique et Vin festival at Clos Vougeot in Burgundy. His performances have been broadcast on CBC, Radio France, Radio Classique, and Medici.tv. He released his debut CD, Cavatine, on the ATMA Classique label in January 2019, and his second album, Benjamin Britten: Solo Cello Suites on the Printemps des arts de Monte-Carlo Label in March 2019.

Cameron is extremely grateful for the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Sylva Gelber Foundation. He is currently exploring the cello canon on the 1769 Joannes Guillami cello, on loan from the Canada Council for the Arts Instrument Bank. He was previously awarded the use the “Bonjour” Stradivarius cello in 2015 from the Canada Council.

Edward Elgar

Sir Edward William Elgar, 1st Baronet, (2 June 1857 – 23 February 1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King’s Musick in 1924.

Although Elgar is often regarded as a typically English composer, most of his musical influences were not from England but from continental Europe. He felt himself to be an outsider, not only musically, but socially. In musical circles dominated by academics, he was a self-taught composer; in Protestant Britain, his Roman Catholicism was regarded with suspicion in some quarters; and in the class-conscious society of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, he was acutely sensitive about his humble origins even after he achieved recognition. He nevertheless married the daughter of a senior British Army officer. She inspired him both musically and socially, but he struggled to achieve success until his forties, when after a series of moderately successful works his Enigma Variations (1899) became immediately popular in Britain and overseas. He followed the Variations with a choral work, The Dream of Gerontius (1900), based on a Roman Catholic text that caused some disquiet in the Anglican establishment in Britain, but it became, and has remained, a core repertory work in Britain and elsewhere. His later full-length religious choral works were well received but have not entered the regular repertory.

In his fifties, Elgar composed a symphony and a violin concerto that were immensely successful. His second symphony and his cello concerto did not gain immediate public popularity and took many years to achieve a regular place in the concert repertory of British orchestras. Elgar’s music came, in his later years, to be seen as appealing chiefly to British audiences. His stock remained low for a generation after his death. It began to revive significantly in the 1960s, helped by new recordings of his works. Some of his works have, in recent years, been taken up again internationally, but the music continues to be played more in Britain than elsewhere.

Elgar has been described as the first composer to take the gramophone seriously. Between 1914 and 1925, he conducted a series of acoustic recordings of his works. The introduction of the moving-coil microphone in 1923 made far more accurate sound reproduction possible, and Elgar made new recordings of most of his major orchestral works and excerpts from The Dream of Gerontius.

Dimitri Shostakovich
Composer

Dmitri Dmitriyevich Shostakovich[n 1] (25 September [O.S. 12 September] 1906 – 9 August 1975) was a Soviet-era Russian composer and pianist[1] who became internationally known after the premiere of his First Symphony in 1926 and was regarded throughout his life as a major composer.

Shostakovich achieved early fame in the Soviet Union, but had a complex relationship with its government. His 1934 opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk was initially a success, but eventually was condemned by the Soviet government, putting his career at risk. In 1948 his work was denounced under the Zhdanov Doctrine, with professional consequences lasting several years. Even after his censure was rescinded in 1956, performances of his music were occasionally subject to state interventions, as with his Thirteenth Symphony (1962). Shostakovich was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR (1947) and the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (from 1962 until his death), as well as chairman of the RSFSR Union of Composers (1960–1968). Over the course of his career, he earned several important awards, including the Order of Lenin, from the Soviet government.

Shostakovich combined a variety of different musical techniques in his works. His music is characterized by sharp contrasts, elements of the grotesque, and ambivalent tonality; he was also heavily influenced by neoclassicism and by the late Romanticism of Gustav Mahler. His orchestral works include 15 symphonies and six concerti (two each for piano, violin, and cello). His chamber works include 15 string quartets, a piano quintet, and two piano trios. His solo piano works include two sonatas, an early set of 24 preludes, and a later set of 24 preludes and fugues. Stage works include three completed operas and three ballets. Shostakovich also wrote several song cycles, and a substantial quantity of music for theatre and film.

Shostakovich’s reputation has continued to grow after his death. Scholarly interest has increased significantly since the late 20th century, including considerable debate about the relationship between his music and his attitudes toward the Soviet government.
