In celebration of Black History Month

Vancouver Island Symphony’s own Principal Bass Trombonist, Scott MacInnes, takes to the podium as love takes centre stage as the Symphony joins forces with powerhouse vocalist Sonia Reid for an unforgettable Valentine’s celebration inspired by the queens of soul. Through the iconic music of Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Tina Turner, this concert wraps audiences in the passion, vulnerability, and joy that defined these legendary voices. Scott MacInnes
VIS Principal Bass Trombone

Scott MacInnes (MMus) has become a leader in the musical community as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger and clinician. In the fall of 2005 Scott moved to British Columbia to play bass trombone for a season with the Victoria Symphony. The following year he joined both the University of Victoria (UVic) and Vancouver Island Symphony (VIS).

Scott takes great pride of his position as Principal Bass Trombone with the VIS and has been fortunate to not only perform as a soloist and chamber musician with this fabulous group but also enjoy the privilege of conducting his esteemed colleagues. At UVic he teaches private trombone lessons, and the Business of Music, as well as conducts the big band, brass choir, trombone choir and Vikes Band. Beyond the University and VIS, Scott can be seen conducting both the Meridiem Wind Orchestra and the Nanaimo Concert Band. Scott is constantly striving to bring the highest quality music to the greatest number of people.

Sonia Reid
Vocalist

Sonia Reid is a dynamic vocalist, seasoned performer, and dedicated vocal coach with over 25 years of experience. A graduate of Redeemer University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, she holds certifications as a Licensed Neuro-Vocal Instructor for Popular Styles and a Suzuki Trained Vocal Teacher (Levels 1 & 2).

Her powerful, soulful performances have captivated audiences across Canada and the United States, including featured appearances at the Sasktel Jazz Festival, The Bassment, and the YXE Divas concert with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (April 2024). Looking ahead, she will take center stage in a solo performance with the Saskatoon Symphony in April 2026. Sonia has also been recognized for her expertise in vocal training through media features, including an interview with CTV’s Caitrin Hodson discussing her innovative teaching methods.

As the founder of Sonia Reid Studios, Sonia works with singers and artists of popular styles, empowering them to develop their unique voices with confidence and artistry. Her studio also offers specialized training for vocal teachers and coaches. In addition to her studio work, she serves as a choir director and adjudicator, further contributing to the development of vocalists at all levels.

With a passion for performance and education, Sonia believes that music must first resonate with the artist to create a lasting impact on audiences. Her mission is to help singers discover their authentic sound while cultivating the technical skills and emotional depth needed to bring their artistry to life.
