A series of 8 questions with VIS’ French Hornist, Heather Walker

What place were you born and where do you live now?

HW I was born in Langley, BC and now I live in Nanaimo.

What is your favourite era/genre of music to perform?

HW All types of classical music – from Brahms to Tchaikovsky to Beethoven to Mahler.  Plus I love playing musicals, operas, chamber music and all sorts of other music!

Who are your musical influences and what do you love about their music?

HW Hmmm….

Your favourite food (only one!)

HW Anything ethnic –  Asian, Indian, Mexican….in fact, I love all food!

Your most memorable performance? Where were you and who were you performing with and why was it memorable?

HW  I’ve loved lots of classical performances, but also have special memories of playing in the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and in the back-up band for the “Adele Live” Vancouver concerts in 2016.

Something unique or unusual about you.

HW I recently have started teaching group fitness classes for seniors in the city of Nanaimo, and combine that with my other training as a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique…helping people to move with ease and efficiency, while improving posture and avoiding injuries.  Very rewarding!

How long have you been a member of the VIS?

HW  I’ve been performing with the VIS for 22 years.

What are you most looking forward to about performing with VIS this year?

HW  Getting to know our new artistic director better, and having the orchestra be challenged to play at an even higher level than previously.
