A series of 8 questions with VIS First Violin, Erin Dorfer

What place were you born and where do you live now?

ED  I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan & now I live in South Surrey

What is your favourite era/genre of music to perform?

ED  Early/Baroque Music

Who are your musical influences and what do you love about their music?

ED Currently, my favourite violinist is Shunske Sato. His playing is so full of ingenuity, musicality, and imagination. His limitless facility on the violin makes his performances so enjoyable to watch. Last year, my dreams came true while studying Baroque violin in The Hauge, Netherlands. I got to have two lessons with him. I discovered that not only is his personality precisely what you see and hear in his playing, but he is also immensely kind and an excellent teacher.

Your favourite food (only one!)

ED Chicken Korma with rice and garlic naan.

Your most memorable performance? Where were you and who were you performing with and why was it memorable?

ED It was during a VIS performance with a piano soloist playing a Mozart Concerto. I have forgotten her name, but she played so softly during her cadenza with such intensity that you could feel the entire Port theatre lean in to hear what she was playing. That moment has stuck with me and encouraged me to be bold and play quietly!

Something unique or unusual about you.

ED On our city lot in Surrey, we grow pears, kiwis, persimmons, Asian pears, sour cherries, blueberries, and raspberries.

How long have you been a member of the VIS?

ED  I have been playing with VIS for 15 years.

What are you most looking forward to about performing with VIS this year?

ED   I am beyond excited to play Tchaikovsky symphony No. 6. It’s a powerful experience playing his works with so many musicians on stage.
